A non-profit organization is organized for purposes other than making a profit. No person owns the property of the non-profit, and no part of non-profit’s income is distributed to members, directors, or officers. Non-profit organizations are created under state law, and may include churches, schools, charities, clinics and hospitals, political organizations, labor unions, professional associations, research institutes, museums, and some governmental agencies.

Though non-profit organizations are formed under state law, an important aspect of these organizations is their federal tax status. Under federal law, an organization can be exempt from tax if it is organized and operated exclusively for religious, charitable, scientific, public safety, literary, or educational, purposes, or works for prevention of cruelty to children or animals, or to develop national or international sports. Social security tax is also currently optional although most nonprofits elect to participate. Many state and local tax exemptions either follow federal law or standards similar to those in federal law.
